A comprehensive guide to hydraulic hoses and fittings for industries

Last Updated on July 31, 2022 by

Hydraulic hoses and fittings work as connectors that are designed to transfer hydraulic fluid among hydraulic components, tools, actuators, and valves. The industrial hose fittings with 1800 HOSE VAN operate with petroleum fluids at high pressure and temperature, these are built with multiple layers of material reinforced.

These hoses are robust and sturdy while being flexible enough to be conveniently used in a myriad of applications. Hydraulic hoses and fittings are available in a vast variety of materials, capabilities, shapes, sealing, etc. Such extensive variety can be perplexing when you try to choose the most suitable hoses for your operations. Here is a guide that provides you with all the necessary information to help you make an informed decision.

The basic construction of modern hydraulic hoses

Hydraulic hoses are supposed to allow a consistent flow of liquids reliability without breaking down. For that reason, these are constructed with a three-layer structure.

Inner tube

This tube is generally made of synthetic rubber or thermoplastic. This tube is pressure-resistant and allows the free flow of liquid. The compatibility of the inner tube with liquids determines the compatibility of the hose.

Reinforcement layer

The reinforcement layer made of braided wire or coil surrounds the inner tube to support it and prevent it from tearing.

Outer layer

The out layer is meant for protecting the inner components of the hose and is made of robust materials.

Common liquids

These hoses are meant to work primarily with three types of fluids. Most hydraulic hoses are designed to carry petroleum oils and liquids with high-water content. However, some specially designed hoses can also be used with synthetic liquids.

The assembly

The first thing that you do before you began assembling hoses is to ask yourself about the five crucial aspects. These aspects are often abbreviated as S.T.A.M.P which stands for size, temperature, application, media/material, and pressure.

The most popular method of assembling hose fittings is crimping and different crimper models can have a slightly different process. However, generally, it involves the following steps.

  • Marking the depth of insertion on the hose
    • Grease the fitting stem with lubricant
    • Push the stem inside the end of the hose
    • Insert the hose into the clamper die and secure the fitting onto the hose by applying pressure through the clamper unit.

Hose fitting material

Hose fittings are available in different types of materials that differ in properties and their applications.

  • Plastic -Corrosion resistant but less durable.
    • Steel- More durable and heat resistant.
    • Stainless steel – Highly corrosion resistant and can work with extremely high temperatures.
    • Brass – Stronger than plastic but less durable than stainless steel. Provides leak-free operation.

Temperature and pressure

Hoses are marked with two temperature values. One is for the temperature of the liquid inside it and the other is the outside working temperature. For both temperatures, maximum and minimum values are defined that must be followed to prevent failure.

Similar to temperature, manufacturers also provide two pressure ratings for internal and external pressure. Minimum and maximum values of these pressures must be adhered to maintain the hose’s performance.

Applications of hydraulic hoses

Hydraulic systems have a large assortment of usage in different industries. Following are some of its common applications.

  • Industry applications such as assembly lines, robotics, presses, power units, etc
    • Mining, construction, and agriculture equipment
    • Oil and gas industry
    • Everyday applications such as plumbing, airplanes, vehicle brakes, etc.
