5 Essential RV Maintenance Tips

Last Updated on January 13, 2023 by Faiza Murtaza

Over 11 million Americans own an RV, which shows how much we love exploring with our home on wheels.

But regardless of their mechanic skills, RV owners must learn how to properly maintain their vehicles as it extends their lifespan and prevents any mishaps when you’re on the road. Luckily, once you cover the basics, then you’re good to go. Maybe that’s why you’re here because you want to expand your RV knowledge to give you peace of mind.

Sounds like you? Don’t worry, you’ve come to the right place. Here are five RV maintenance tips to know.

1. Check the Batteries

You can only bask in RV life when your vehicle has full batteries, especially if you haven’t driven it for a season. As a general rule, keep your charge at all times and invest in a new one every five years so it runs smoothly. Note, remove your batteries during winter and store them somewhere warm, otherwise, they could potentially freeze and die.

And if you’re keen on sustainable living, then consider choosing a solar kit so you can access fere electricity around the clock.

2. Test the Tire Pressure

One of the top maintenance tips is to regularly test the tire pressure. Use a monitoring system to check the levels, then inspect each tire to check for uneven tread wear. If you ignore this step, it could potentially blow out, putting your RV living to an end.

3. Change the Oil

Unlike a car, it’s important to change the oil in your recreational vehicle every season to ensure the machinery is properly lubricated. Or, to be precise, change the oil every 4,000 miles as it keeps your engine healthy. Note, changing the oil is crucial, otherwise, it could damage the engine and you’ll foot an expensive repair bill.

4. Maintain Your Tanks

Most RVs have several tanks, which each needs to be maintained. For instance, freshwater tanks only need a bi-annual flush, often before putting your RV into storage over the colder months.

For your gray water tank, use an odor blocker as it will eliminate any foul, lingering smells. When you tackle your black tank, only use approved chemicals as they are designed to break down solids. Once you’ve emptied the tank, check the sensors are clean before moving on.

5. Inspect for Damage

Take the time and inspect your RV inside-out, even if it’s stored in a safe space. Start by inspecting the roof and seams of your vehicle as it will help you spot leaks or spot any critters that have burrowed into your vehicle. Further, check your RV’s awning is clean and there aren’t any tears in the fabric, otherwise, it’s redundant.

Use These RV Maintenance Tips

Hopefully, you’ll use this RV maintenance and fix any mistakes before they develop into further problems.

Start by inspecting your vehicle for any damage, test the tire pressure, and change the oil regularly. You should also check the battery works and maintain your tanks to extend the RV’s lifespan. Good luck!
