Learning how to tow an abandoned vehicle is a necessary skill for any driver. If you encounter an abandoned car on the side of the road, it’s important to know how to safely remove it so that it doesn’t become a hazard. In this blog post, we’ll teach you the basics of towing an abandoned car and provide some tips for safely removing it from the road. Keep reading for more information!

1. Gather Tools

Before attempting to tow an abandoned vehicle, you’ll want to make sure that you have all of the equipment necessary. Don’t attempt any type of towing without safety chains and proper straps. The last thing you want is for your car to be damaged during the process! Additionally, bring extra cleats if there are no other cars around that can act as an anchor for your strap or chain.

2. Check Vehicle’s Safety

You’ll need to inspect the car before beginning the process of removing it from the road – this will ensure that everyone stays safe throughout the process! Start by looking inside of the vehicle and checking for hidden danger. If a person has been sleeping in their car or are dangerous items inside of the vehicle, you should be cautious about what to do next. Finally, look under the car for leaking fluids that may pose a danger on the road or in your vehicle if they come into contact with you or it.

3. Notify Authorities

If the abandoned car is still drivable and has not been involved in an accident, it’s best to wait for authorities to tow the car away. If possible, leave your information so the owner can get in touch with you later! Failing that, don’t attempt to move it yourself without checking local laws first – not all states allow private individuals to remove vehicles from public roads.

4. Identify Anchor Point

You’ll need to identify a place where a strap or chain can be attached – this is generally a solid part of the vehicle that isn’t going anywhere. If possible, choose a point behind one of the rear wheels as it will provide better support for your winch. If you’re using straps instead of chains, make sure that nothing is in danger of coming loose and damaging the car, yourself, passengers, or surrounding vehicles.

5. Loosely Attach Strap/Chain

Don’t secure your strap or chain too tightly before securing your other end to your tow hitch or anchor point – it should be just tight enough so that it doesn’t come off during use and no more than necessary! Make sure that the strap or chain is not touching the ground and dragging – you don’t want to run over it yourself. Place heavy items such as large rocks on either side of the strap or chain so that it stays securely in place.

6. Connect Strap/Chain to Tow Hitch

Connect your strap or chain to your vehicle with a quick-release mechanism, if possible, otherwise you’ll need an extension! If both ends of your strap/chain are attached, tighten until you can feel tension when pulling up on one end of the line using your body weight alone.

Make sure that everything is secure before attempting to tow away from an abandoned car!

7.  Test for Stability

You don’t want to tow an abandoned car without first determining whether or not it is stable enough to be pulled away. You should pull up on the strap/chain using your body weight alone, then attach your car to your tow hitch and test it again. Finally, attach a stabilizing strap (if available) to the rear end of the vehicle and connect it to another solid part of the car – this will help provide extra support. If any one of these elements fails, you’ll need to think about how you can make the situation safer before continuing with removing an abandoned vehicle.

8. Pull Away!

Once everything has been tested for stability, slowly release tension on your strap/ until all slack is removed from the line. You’ll need to ensure that everything is directly in front of you – this will allow your vehicle to move in the safest direction possible. Once ready, start moving slowly and steadily in a straight line until you’ve reached a safe distance from traffic before applying additional power!

As with anything involving a car, safety should be your highest priority when removing abandoned vehicles from public roadways. Always make sure that all lines are secure and free from tangles before beginning the process of winching an abandoned car away. If you have any questions or concerns regarding how to tow an abandoned vehicle off of a highway or other major thoroughfare, it’s best to contact your local law enforcement agency for more information on correct procedures and general rules that may apply to your area.

And there you have it – a quick guide on how to tow away an abandoned vehicle without damaging other cars or property or hurting yourself! If it’s been involved in an accident, however, for safety reasons you should really wait until the authorities arrive before attempting any such process as they will know the correct way to tow away a damaged car.

Good luck and stay safe!
