How to Serve Sparkling Wine: Everything You Need to Know

It’s time to celebrate! Whether it’s a wedding, birthday party, or graduation, there is always a reason to pour bubbles.

But, how do you serve sparkling wine? It’s not as easy as pouring from the bottle and calling it good.

There are many ways in which you can serve your favorite beverage for any occasion. In this article, we will explore sparkling wine serving tips that will help make the experience even more festive.

Don’t Store the Wine Too Long:

Sparkling wine is best served as soon as it’s opened. If you can’t finish the entire bottle, then we recommend that you drink half and save the rest for another occasion.

Don’t store sparkling wines too long before serving them because they might lose some of their sparkles. The carbon dioxide in sparkling wines gives these beverages a refreshing fizz.

Though, this gas will escape through any tiny opening or imperfection if stored too long without being tightly sealed. When bubbles fade away, what remains behind isn’t always pleasant to taste.

This is why we recommend using this sparkling wine preservation system for the best results.

Chill Your Sparkling Wine Properly:

The biggest mistake most people make when serving sparkling wine is that they do not chill them properly. It might seem like a good idea to drink your bubbly at room temperature, but it will taste flat and lose its sparkle.

Our advice would be to store the bottle of sparkling wine in the fridge for about an hour or two before you want to serve it.

The best way to test if the beverage has reached the right level of coldness is by placing a drop on your wrist. Once it feels nice and chilly, then it’s ready to drink.

Open the Sparkling Wine Cork Safely:

Opening a sparkling wine bottle can be a daunting task, but with the right technique, it becomes much easier. We recommend using a waiter’s corkscrew to remove the cork from the bottle.

This type of corkscrew has two levers: one for insertion into the cork and another that is used to extract it from the bottle.

Make sure you insert the lever all the way into the cork before trying to pull it out. If done correctly, this will minimize any chances of champagne spilling over.

Pour Sparkling Wine at an Angle:

When pouring sparkling wine, make sure you pour it at an angle. This will help prevent the beverage from spilling over.

If you’re serving sparkling wine in flutes, then we recommend filling them about two-thirds of the way full. This will give your guests enough space to appreciate the bubbles.

Rotate the Bottle for Better Leverage:

If you’re serving sparkling wine in a large glass, such as a champagne coupe, then we recommend rotating the bottle for better leverage.

This will help prevent the beverage from spilling over and make it easier to pour.

Serve With Food:

Sparkling wine is the perfect drink to serve with food. It pairs well with light appetizers and desserts.

For example, you can serve sparkling wine with cheese plates, charcuterie boards, or fruit tarts.

When pairing sparkling wine with food, think about complementary flavors.

For instance, if you’re serving brie cheese on a cracker, then try pairing it with a brut rosé sparkling wine that has hints of strawberry and cherry flavors.

Release the Cork Slowly:

When serving sparkling wines, you want to make sure that the cork is released slowly. Otherwise, it might break apart and leave bits of glass in your guests’ glasses.

If this happens, then we recommend removing those pieces immediately with a pair of tweezers or tongs before they get swallowed by someone’s mouth.

Use Tulip Glasses Instead of Saucers:

Tulip glasses are a much better option for serving sparkling wines because they allow the drinker to appreciate its flavors and aromas.

Champagne saucers, also known as champagne flutes or coupes, have straight sides that narrow at their top ends. This makes it difficult to swirl the beverage around in your glass after you’ve poured it.

Pouring sparkling wine into tulip glasses allows for better aeration so that more of its flavors come out when drinking it.

It also prevents any spills from happening if someone sets his or her glass down on a table with company plates on them.

Always Use Clean Glasses:

No matter what type of glass you’re using to serve sparkling wine, it’s always important to make sure they are clean.

Even the tiniest bit of dirt or grease can ruin the drink’s flavor profile.

If you don’t have time to wash your glasses right before serving sparkling wine, then we recommend using a quick-drying sanitizer like Star San. This will kill any bacteria and leave your glasses smelling fresh.

Seal a Sparkling Wine Bottle Properly After Use:

Once your sparkling wine bottle has been used, it’s important to seal it properly so that the carbon dioxide doesn’t escape.

One way to do this is by using a champagne stopper. This will keep the beverage fresh for up to a week.

Another option is to cork the bottle with a regular cork and then store it in a cool, dark place. Just make sure you check on it every now and then to see if the cork has dried out and needs replacing.

Avoid Using a Flimsy Serving Tray:

If you’re serving sparkling wine on a tray, make sure it’s a sturdy one that can hold the weight of the bottle.

A flimsy serving tray might not be able to support the bottle’s weight and could easily tip over, resulting in spilled champagne.

Make Sure Ice Is Not Nearby:

If you’re serving sparkling wine on ice, then make sure the cubes are big enough to keep your bottle from falling over.

Otherwise, they might crack when someone tries to remove them and could end up breaking or spilling in your guests’ glasses.

We recommend not using ice with sparkling wines because it waters down the beverage’s flavor profile.

Also avoid adding fruit garnishes like lemon wedges since these will also add water to the drink (plus, you’ll lose even more carbonation).

This is why we prefer keeping things simple by only pairing sparkling wine with food that compliments its flavors instead of overpowering them.
