Cleaning Sink System

Last Updated on January 21, 2024 by Asfa Rasheed

It is not a very glamorous task and is one that most people often leave to someone else, but cleaning a sink and the attached system is an essential chore in any home. This is because kitchens are often the hub of the home and so the sink likely sees a lot of action – from greasy pans and pots, to soil extracts from watered houseplants. As a result of this, over time there can be a build up of grime and food which goes onto block the sink and all of the drainage system that feeds it.

In order to ensure that your kitchen sink remains in the best possible condition, there are a number of things that you can do on a weekly basis to keep it clean and well maintained. These include the following things:

Sanitize the sink

Before anything, make sure that the sink is completely clear of dishes, mugs, or even scraps of food. It is important to then give it a quick rinse to clear everything completely from it. After that has been done, it is time to start the scrubbing process. However, the approach taken depends on the type of material that the sink is made from – for instance, it may be made from porcelain or stainless steel. The latter of these two materials requires a coating of baking soda put onto it prior to scrubbing. Then it is a case of scrubbing until all stains are removed.

Wipe down the handles and faucets

All of the handles and faucets, regardless of the material, need to be cleaned using soap and water. With the aid of a brush or a sponge, wipe them down thoroughly and use a toothbrush in order to get to those harder to reach spots. Any white spots that are present is a build up of lime from the various minerals that are in the water coming out of the tap. By adding a small spoon of vinegar to the soapy solution, it will remove the lime built up.

Clear the disposal and drain

When a sink begins to produce an unpleasant odor, that is a clear and obvious sign that something is not right and it needs to be cleaned. Using the combination for both vinegar and baking soda is not only effective for getting rid of the stench, but should also unclog a blocked drain. For particularly blocked drains in Adelaide then reach out to a trained professional for help – there is only so much as two parts white vinegar and one part baking soda can do after all.

The disposal can be cleaned with a combination of ice, salt, and lemon. Have the cold water running at the time and turn on the disposal until all of the ice has gone. The salt works to scrub the blades clean and the ice is effective at getting rid of any grime and gunk that there is. Finally, the lemon works to produce a fresh smelling odor.
