An Overview of Underrated Anime

It is hard to choose anime that are not especially popular or well-known and consider them underrated anime. Plenty of anime out there don’t get the recognition and deserve it for various reasons. Even some have seen that you wish more popular, but it is possible to find you feel are underrated anime.

Here are Some Underrated Anime

Baby Steps (2015)

Baby Steps has a lot going for it. It is a manga with over 100+ volumes, and it pulls it off well in its 25 episode run – no filler whatsoever. The protagonist is brilliant but lacks self-confidence, so he starts playing tennis to change that. The anime is grounded in reality and shows the details of what it’s like to be a student competing at tennis at a high level.

Aoharu x Machinegun (2015)

Surprisingly violent for being an ecchi anime with a cute protagonist(?), Aoharu x Machinegun is a giddy, fast-paced thrill ride. It has a decent enough plot and doesn’t rely on ecchi scenes or fanservice for entertainment value.

Kuroko’s Basketball (2012)

Despite being a shonen sports anime, Kuroko’s Basketball is not your typical shonen series. This is also underrated anime series. It takes time to develop its characters, so the plot moves forward. The protagonist’s team has an interesting dynamic, and they show off some epic teamwork in their biggest games against other schools.

Hajime no Ippo (2000)

Hajime no Ippo might be over 15 years old, but it still stands as a quintessential sports anime. Unlike most other sports romances where the protagonist has to overcome a huge obstacle, Hajime no Ippo’s protagonist is a regular guy honestly trying to improve his life through boxing. His goals remain realistic and relatable throughout the series, which only makes the inevitable triumph over adversity more satisfying.

Yowamushi Pedal (2013)

Yowamushi Pedal’s charm is in its dynamic characters and their relationships. The protagonist may want to race bikes, but he has a lot of other issues on his mind: like being hopelessly in love with a girl who barely knows he exists or having an abusive mother who hates him and wants him to quit cycling. For these reasons, it’s a highly relatable anime.

Hell Girl (Jigoku Shoujo in Japanese) is an anime with a great story, amazing characters, beautiful art, and animation. No doubt about it – all of these points are true.

Yet the show is not very well known; I see posts on Reddit often asking what this anime is – since there are no Wikipedia articles or rumors of a third season, it is clear that this anime isn’t very popular.

Hell Girl was originally a manga series, and when it comes to anime – most people prefer not to watch manga adaptations. This show has many horror aspects, which leads to a lot of hate from the community.

In conclusion – Hell Girl is a show that deserves a lot more attention, and I hope many people will look into it in the future.

Horizon In The Middle Of Nowhere

The anime industry is full of over-hyped pieces that never fail to disappoint. Despite being good, certain pieces don’t get too much attention and deserve more appreciation from the anime community. Today, we will be showcasing some underrated anime gems of this generation.

Blast of Tempest

In this anime, there are two main characters, Aika and Hakaze. He was a close friend since young age despite being complete opposites. The plot twists along the way keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. It’s undoubtedly an emotional ride. So have tissues ready for some scenes because not everything turns out happy in the end. But even though there are sad bits, I wouldn’t call this show a drama. The comedy side balances things out nicely. One final thing to add is that there’s a tad bit of fanservice in the anime, which is the only reason I don’t count it as a masterpiece.

Golden Time

This anime takes place in college where two students named Banri and Koko meet each other by chance and become close when they share their experiences with liking someone who didn’t reciprocate their feelings back then, but now everything has changed. As expected from a romance, these two falls for one another, but this show is more than just a romantic comedy so expect some drama and tragedy. Despite being only 24 episodes long, you can feel that most. If not all, loose ends. One last thing to add is that there is a high school sequel to this show which, despite not being as good, does return to the characters from this anime in college, so if you liked Golden Time, then I’d recommend watching it for sure.

Yuyushiki

This anime follows three friends in their final year of junior high who decided to join the data processing club with no real purpose. The three girls goof around and have fun, all while helping out people around them at the same time throughout each episode or trying to anyway. It’s an enjoyable ride filled with great comedy and likable characters along with some actual plot but nothing too serious. If you want something relaxing and cute to watch then, this is a great choice.

Hanasaku Iroha

This one follows Ohana, who was forced to move in with her grandmother after fighting with her mom at age sixteen. But despite the title, there isn’t that much romance as it follows Ohana as she struggles to grow as an adult and learn what family truly means along the way, which you could say is somewhat similar to Golden Time except more down-to-earth. The anime has some mysteries that keep you interested from episode to episode, and each character has an attractive personality. If nothing else, this show will be good for introducing you to a variety of personalities. I should also mention that this show is quite long with 50 episodes, so it’s a good candidate for marathoning.

Tari Tari

Tari Tari is another underrated anime that follows the lives of five high school students who join together to form an after-school choir club, which happens to be somewhat popular. Still, they didn’t join because they wanted more popularity than their other interests. The story focuses instead on the characters themselves and how while they may not be influential singers, their strong bond makes up for that in spades. It’s got some feel going for it, which you’d expect from any anime that has music in it, but regardless of that, I can say without hesitation this show is one of my all-time favorites, maybe even top 5.

Anohana Movie Underrated Anime

Despite having already seen Anohana, I went into the movie without expecting much. Since it was just an hour and a half long episode. Although some scenes you do not know overall. It took what made you love the original series so far beyond what its runtime would suggest. The characters are still outstanding. The music used throughout is fantastic, and all in all. There are some notable developments for characters other than the main five characters in this sequel. Some expand upon all that Anohana stood for. So basically, watch this one after you’ve seen Anohana because it might even convince you to re-watch that too!

Nagi no Asukara Underrated Anime

Despite being stuck on land, these mermaids are pretty human in their values and are just trying to find a new home. Where they can live together regardless of which kind of fish-person they are. That’s about all I can say without revealing any spoilers. Still, regardless of what kind of person you are. If you’re looking for an anime full of drama, then this is definitely worth your time. Since it’s got quite a bit going for it, especially since all the characters feel fleshed out with their struggles.

Your Lie in April (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso)

Your Lie in April is yet another underrated music anime with a dark story. So it is recommended to have a box of tissues nearby when watching because the feels are real. The protagonist experiences extreme depression after his mom passes away. Which causes him to stop playing the piano entirely until he meets Kaori Miyazono. He has some similarly depressive traits but plays the violin instead, one of Kousei Arima’s favorite instruments before his mom passed away.

While her personality may seem pretty immature at first. In the end, it becomes evident that she is trying to hide her true feelings in order not to be hurt. All she wants is to make everyone happy at the end of the day. This anime has some great music you can hear for yourself since there’s a full version of one of my favorite tracks (Sutabaa) featured throughout the show, and it’ll probably make you want to go out and buy the OST tbh.

Hyouka Underrated Anime

While this anime doesn’t feature many songs or even any school clubs like most other anime. There is a scene where the protagonist is walking home and has a random flashback to when he was in middle school. His sister went missing on her way home. The whole anime could have been pretty much the same except with less interesting characters. It managed to create an entire mystery around who this man was. If you like anime that makes you think, this is probably for you, and I can’t say more than that without revealing too much.
