Every woman (and some men) has considered getting hair extensions at some point or other.

But unless you’re a hairdressing industry professional, it can be challenging to differentiate between the types available. To a rookie, they all seem the same.

So, if you want to walk into a hairdresser’s knowing exactly what you need to get wow-factor results, it’s time to get clued up.

1. Real Human Hair Extensions

Human hair extensions are (as the name suggests) made from human hair. Because they are natural, they blend well with your own hair, and they can be treated the same.

For this reason, if you want to straighten, perm, or color your hair, hairdressers will generally recommend this type of extension because it’s more amenable to hair treatments.

2. Synthetic Hair Extensions

Synthetic hair extensions are a more affordable option than real human hair extensions, but they have limitations.

Dyes and heat can damage the synthetic fibers, so you have limited styling options with synthetic extensions.

You can pay for higher-quality extensions that blend like natural hair. However, synthetic extensions often have a wiry texture that is different from your own hair.

3. Tape-In Hair Extensions

A hairdresser will attach tape-in hair extensions onto either side of your natural hair. These extensions must align perfectly with your roots, so it’s advisable not to attempt this yourself.

The tape on the extensions is heated up, which melts it onto your hair, ensuring the extensions don’t fall out. Tape-in extensions are semi-permanent and last around 4-8 weeks. However, this depends on how well you look after them.

4. Fusion Hair Extensions

Fusions are bonded to your hair using glue. It’s a 3-4 hour process, and you should always hire a hairdresser to do it as it can damage your hair if it’s not done correctly.

These are semi-permanent; they can stay in for up to 4 months, but they should be repositioned every 2-3 months as your hair grows and your natural roots become visible.

5. Sew-In

Sew-in hair extensions (otherwise known as a weave) are braided into natural hair. The hairdresser will braid your hair into cornrows first and then use a needle to sew the extensions into your hair.

Getting a weave is a long process, but the results are permanent, and no one would know that you have extensions.
