Peristaltic Pump

Last Updated on August 15, 2023 by

A peristaltic pump is a positive displacement pump. Peristaltic pumps move liquids along by squeezing liquid-filled hose with a one-way “milking” action, while a diaphragm pump moves liquid through suction created by a vibrating diaphragm.

A peristaltic pump uses a rotor to squeeze the leak tube or tube, thereby forcing the pumped liquid through the tube. The transferred fluid will not come into direct contact with any part of the pumping mechanism. It is ideal for pumping liquids that must be sterilized or that must not be released into the environment.

Working Principle of Peristaltic Pump

The peristaltic pump has two main components: the hose and the rotor. The hose must be made of robust and chemical-resistant material, prevent the escape of air or liquids and run along the outer wall of the circular cavity of the pump. The rotor is located in the center of the pump cavity and moves in a circular motion.

As the rotor rotates, the rollers or shoes attached to the rotor compress the tube, causing fluid to flow to the pump outlet while creating a vacuum, which draws more fluid into the inlet pump. Most peristaltic pumps are electric. Depending on the size of the pump and the method used to close the tube, there may be oil in the pump cavity to lubricate the outside of the tube as the tube tightens.

Choosing the right type of tube and material is the most important aspect of using a peristaltic pump correctly. The pipe must be made of a material suitable for a specific application to prevent corrosion or premature wear when the pipe is compressed, which can cause the pipe to leak. Hose can often be changed while wearing them. It is very important to choose pipes with sufficient chemical resistance to the pumped liquid. The types of tubing commonly used in a peristaltic pump is:

  1. Polyvinyl chloride
  2. Silicone rubber
  3. Fluoropolymer
  4. Pharmed

Applications of Peristaltic Pump

The peristaltic pump completely separates the contact between the pump and the process environment. Therefore, this type of pump is often the preferred pump for applications that must ensure the absence of cross-contamination and require complete separation from the liquid and the surrounding environment.

This is particularly important when the end user works with corrosive units or even sterile liquids and such means must not come into contact with the environment. Peristaltic pumps are often used in a variety of industrial applications because they are particularly suited to pumping abrasive and viscous liquids. It is also commonly used in stoichiometric applications and chlorine pumping applications. It is perhaps the most common application in medicine, where it is often used for blood circulation or intravenous fluids.

Advantages of the peristaltic pump

One of the greatest advantages of peristaltic pumps is the separation of the moving parts of the pump and the process tank, thus eliminating any risk of cross-contamination.

It is easy to clean and disinfect the pump because only the part of the pump that is in contact with the pumped liquid is inside the tube.

The maintenance cost of the pump is relatively low because it does not use valves, seals or cable glands.

This pump is suitable for corrosive liquids and can easily control corrosive liquids and sludge.

The simple design of the pump basically prevents the effects of backflow and siphon.

Disadvantages of peristaltic pumps

The flow characteristic of the pump is not a constant and consistent flow, but more pulsed flow. This means that alternative solutions must be considered if flow characteristics are required.

The tube is systematically compressed and decompressed and tends to break over time. Therefore, it must be replaced regularly.
