Is your engagement ring, wedding band, or class ring looking a little grungy? Can you even remember the last time that you cleaned it? If you’re like most people, it’s probably not something that you do regularly.

Rings can get extremely dirty, though, especially if you cook a lot, garden, or do other work with your hands while wearing your rings. If you want to keep it looking sparkly and shiny, read on to learn how to clean a ring properly.

How Often Should You Clean a Ring?

If you wear your rings regularly, you should clean them 1-2 times per month at home. For more thorough cleanings, take them to the jeweler once or twice a year. Jewelers have special tools to get them really clean and they can also inspect them for any loose stones or other damage.

Whether it’s an engagement ring, wedding ring, or class ring, you want to make sure you clean it often so it lasts for decades. If you’re thinking of purchasing a class ring for yourself or someone else, you can get more information on class rings here.

At-Home Ring Cleaning Tips

How you clean your ring at home depends on what type of ring it is. Diamonds, pearls, gold, and platinum are all cleaned a bit differently, so you need to know what you are working with.

Cleaning Gold Rings

Gold rings can be cleaned with warm water and mild soap, like dish soap. You can also add 1/2 teaspoon of ammonia as well. Dip your gold rings in the cleaner and then use a soft-bristled brush to clean them. Rinse and then pat dry and enjoy your freshly cleaned ring.

Cleaning Platinum Rings

To clean your platinum ring, make a cleaning solution of warm water and dish soap. Soak your platinum ring for 30 minutes and use a soft brush to clean away any grime. Rinse it and then dry it thoroughly.

Cleaning Diamond Rings

Just like gold and platinum rings, diamonds can be cleaned with a homemade cleaning solution made of warm water and dish soap. Ivory dish soap is popular for ring cleaning, but any mild dish soap you have at home will work.

Soak your ring for 20-30 minutes and then use a small, soft-bristled brush to clean around the stone and the prongs. Pay close attention to underneath, as dirt and grime can get caked in those areas, dulling your ring and making it look dirty.

You can also use a gem cloth to clean your diamond if you get any oily substances on it, such as after cooking. Never use household cleaners and don’t believe any article you read that tells you to use toothpaste to clean it either.

How to Clean a Ring So It Lasts

Now that you know how to clean a ring, go to your jewelry box, pull out all your rings, and get to cleaning! It’s quick and easy, you probably have everything you need in your home right now, and the results are amazing for just a little effort.
