Mindhunter season 3 is a popular TV series of Mindhunter crime series. With Joe Penhall at the helm and David Fincher as the real showrunner and creative force, “Mindhunter” creates a dystopian atmosphere of dread from reality-based material. Douglas and Mark Olshaker, the crime series follows Holden Ford, a young, up-and-coming FBI agent who teams up with senior agent Bill Tench and psychology professor Wendy Carr to investigate the twisted minds of known serial killers and revive cold cases.
Since its premiere in 2017, the Netflix original series has released two seasons, garnering widespread fan support and universal critical acclaim. Critics have particularly enjoyed the haunting atmosphere, cinematic visual effects, and impeccably developed characters. When will air Mindhunter season 3?
With the series on indefinite hiatus, we can only speculate as to when the Mindhunter season 3 will premiere, if at all. Fincher is obviously busy with the second seasons of Love, Death and Robots, and The Man, the latter of which hits Netflix on December 4, in addition to the coronavirus pandemic that has kept countless series and movies off screens. That said, we probably won’t see Mindhunter season 3 until 2022 at the earliest, if it returns at all.
There was a hiatus of almost two years between seasons 1 and 2, which were released in October 2017 and August 2019, so fans are used to the wait. We will have to wait a little longer than expected.
What is the plot of Mindhunter Season 3?
The first season of Mindhunter takes place in the late 1970s and the second season in the early 1980s. It stands to reason that the action of the third season will take place in the early to mid-1980s. This means we could see any number of infamous serial killers in the series. Most likely, we’ll see more of the BTK killer, who appears in seemingly unrelated scenes in both seasons. Based on the source material, it’s entirely possible that Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, or Jeffrey Dahmer could appear in Mindhunter Season 3.
Vulture suggests that, based on the actual criminals FBI agents John E. Douglas and Robert K. Ressler have interviewed in the past, we could see killers like John Joubert IV, Joseph Paul Franklin, Donald Harvey, and Gary Ridgeway in Season 3.
In addition to the investigation, the series has plenty of intrigue surrounding Brian, Bill’s adopted son, who was involved in a murder in season two. Somewhat more vaguely, McCallany hinted to The Hollywood Reporter that season three could be a “complete reimagining of the series.” After two seasons shot in Pittsburgh, the series could change locations if picked up for Mindhunter season 3.
Which serial killers could appear in Mindhunter season 3?
It’s pretty easy to figure out who from the regular cast will be returning for Mindhunter’s third season, but it’s much harder to determine which villains they’ll be interrogating and/or investigating. Much of this conversation probably has to do with the decade in which the new season will take place: the original plan was for the series to take place in the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. And yes, that timeline opens the door to many possible narratives. But before we go any further, it’s likely that wherever the new season takes place, Holden and the gang will spend more time with infamous “class killer” Ed Kemper, as Cameron Britton’s gruesome work on the series has yielded some of its most suspenseful moments.
Plus, the return of Sonny Valicenti is all but guaranteed, as the investigation and eventual capture of his character – the as-yet-unidentified “BTK killer” Dennis Roeder – becomes the obvious series finale. Who else the FBI team might find: Famous characters like Ted Bundy, Richard Ramirez, the “Night Stalker,” and cannibal killer Jeffrey Dahmer are in play, as well as the infamous Killer 22 case and the explosive investigation of Ted Kaczynski, a.k.a. the “Unabomber.”
These cases are in play because the man who wrote the book on which the series is based (former FBI agent John Douglas) worked on or helped investigate each of them. But if Fincher and company wanted to maximize dramatic effect, they would dive headfirst into Douglas’ work on the Green River killer case that nearly led to his death. Let’s hope we get to see this engaging storyline in a future season of Mindhunter.
Has the third season of Mindhunter been renewed?
“Mindhunter” creator David Fincher said in an interview to promote his upcoming biopic “Mank” that a third season is unlikely. The Mindhunter team hasn’t released much information about the series’ third season, but the little news we’ve gotten isn’t good.
Earlier this year, the main actors were released from their contracts so they could look for other work, suggesting that there won’t be a third season anytime soon.
A Netflix spokesperson explained that director David Fincher “may return to Mindhunter in the future,” but for now “feels it would be unfair to the actors to prevent them from pursuing other work while he explores new work for himself.”
Six months later, we received an update on the third series, although it is not particularly useful.
The second season’s director of photography, Eric Messerschmidt, recently said he doesn’t know what the series will become, but he hopes for a third season.
“I hear things are on hold for a while. We’ll see, who knows?” – He told Collider. “But it would be an honor to come back.”
“I loved working with David, I loved the cast and crew, and it was an amazing time in my life,” he continued. “I was lucky to be able to work on it and contribute to it. It was a particularly important and poignant moment in my career. But yeah, I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going on.”
With David Finch busy with the film Mank and the animated series Love, Death, and Robots, it doesn’t look like Mindhunter season 3 will be hitting our screens anytime soon, despite reports from Hollywood Reporter that Fincher has five seasons of the series planned.

Has Netflix stopped the show Mindhunter?
Netflix has not yet officially canceled the Mindhunter series. A company spokesperson confirmed that a third season is not in the works, but noted that it could appear in five to ten years.
Netflix executives also have to keep an eye on the series’ audience figures and analyze them in light of production costs. According to the report, Fincher has confirmed that there will not be a third season of Mindhunter in the near future. He ties audience figures to production costs, “At a certain level, you have to be realistic: dollars should equal eyeballs.”
On January 15, 2020, Netflix told TVLine that the third season of Mindhunter had been put on indefinite hold (technically, it wasn’t canceled – only the cast and crew were released from their contracts).
“David Fincher is focused on directing his first film for Netflix, Munk, and producing the second season of Love, Death, and Robots,” a spokesperson said. “He may return to the Mindhunter film in the future, but for now, he believes it would be unfair to the actors to prevent them from pursuing other work while he explores new work for himself.”
One of the main actors, Holt McCallany, who plays special agent Bill Tench, is optimistic about the future of the series. In an interview with Pop Culture, he said he hopes for not just a third season, but two more.
“We hope to screen all five seasons because viewers seem to have really responded to the series, people really like it,” he said.
At the moment, there is no trailer for Mindhunter season 3, and given that the series isn’t going to continue anytime soon, it’s safe to assume that it won’t either. As soon as Netflix releases a teaser for the third episode of David Fincher’s film, we’ll be sure to share it with everyone.

Why we trust Mindhunter?
Given the success of “Mank,” presumably Fincher’s relationship with Netflix is now at its peak, and the time is right for a third season of “Mindhunter.”
Of course, it’s no secret that working on Mindhunter took its toll, as Fincher told Vulture last year, “It’s a 90-hour week. It’s all-consuming in your life. When I finished, I was really exhausted and I thought, I don’t know if I have the energy for a third season now.”
Another reason the series stalled was its huge budget. “Look, for the audience it had, it was an expensive series,” Fincher explained. “We talked about finishing ‘Manc’ and then seeing how you felt, but honestly, I don’t think we could do it for less than what I did in the second season.”
So, will Netflix be willing to pony up the money Fincher would need to do Mindhunter Season 3 his way? Probably: if there’s one thing Netflix is happy to spend money on, it’s potential award winners.
And considering Netflix’s current slump in prestige original content, we think the streaming giant will be more than willing to keep one of its best series, even if it’s at a loss.

FBI agents are confronted with real cases that are happening or could happen and question them about what alarms them, how they react, and what charges could be brought against them in order to catch the real serial killer who stars in this season.
