What is vertigo?

Vertigo is not described as a disease or condition. Rather, it is a symptom. This symptom includes feeling like you or the environment around has started to spin or move when it is not. This feeling can range from not even realizing it’s there to feeling so extremely dizzy that you cannot even balance yourself properly and cause a hindrance in your everyday tasks. Other symptoms include difficulty in walking or standing because of the loss in balance, dizziness, feeling sick, high temperature and ringing in your ears. Vertigo can occur all of a sudden and stay for just a few seconds as well. However, sometimes it lasts a longer time. If the vertigo becomes severe then it becomes a part of your everyday life causing a lot of difficulty.

What causes vertigo to occur?

  1. One of the main causes for vertigo is known as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) which causes specific head movements to trigger vertigo
  2. Having migraines which are severe forms of headaches that occur on only one side of the head usually can also trigger vertigo
  3. An inner ear infection known as labyrinthitis can also be a cause of vertigo
  4. vestibular neuritis which is a swelling of the vestibular nerve, that runs into the inner ear and sends messages to the brain that help to control balance can result in vertigo emerging due to the inflammation of this nerve

How to treat Vertigo:

In some cases, vertigo improves on its own as time goes by without requiring any form of treatment. However, in some cases vertigo occurs as a repeated episode within months and years and hence requires some level of treatment.

For what causes vertigo, there are specific treatments for them. For example, different forms of head movements are used to treat BPPV. Medications such as antihistamines can also be used in early and most cases of vertigo. A series of exercises are also found useful as form of treatment, as recommended by your doctor in accordance to the cause of the vertigo.

Self-care plays a key role in any issues you may be facing in your life, this includes treating vertigo. There are a number of things you can do to help yourself which include:

  • doing simple exercises that can help make your symptoms better
  • sleeping with your head raised by two to three pillows is found to be helpful
  • when getting off your bed, get up slowly and sit on the edge of your bed for a minute before properly standing up
  • try to avoid bending downwards to pick up anything from the floor
  • monitor your head movements and move them slowly during your routinely activities
