It’s a rainy day and you’re stuck inside. The rain is falling from the sky in heavy sheets, but that doesn’t stop you from being able to hear it pounding on your roof. You can see the water pooling around the edge of your gutters as it flows off of them and down towards the ground…

But what happens if there isn’t any way for you to get up on a ladder to clean them? Well, don’t worry! There are plenty of things that you can do without needing an extra set of hands or some expensive machinery!

In this article, we’ll go over some easy ways that you can keep those gutters clear without having to climb up onto a ladder. We’ll also discuss some safety precautions.

#1. Vacuuming Your Gutters

A basic level of maintenance can be handled by vacuuming your gutters with a standard shop-vac or wet/dry vacuum (i.e., as long as the debris is not too heavy to be sucked up by the hose). This solution is only recommended for those who have a square or rectangular gutter system. If you have a round or “honey-combed” style, the vacuum will not be able to reach around the bends and corners of your gutters.

In addition, before vacuuming your gutters, ensure that they are clean the rest of the way by using one of our other methods, such as a gutter flusher or by manually removing the remaining debris.

#2. Clearing Out Your Gutters with a Gutter Flusher

One of the simplest ways to get your gutters clean is to use a gutter flusher, which can be rented from any rental center. It might require two people: one to flush and one to catch the debris.

Use a garden hose and attach it either to your home’s exterior faucet or an exterior spigot at least 10 feet away from your gutter system. Turn on the water slowly so you don’t damage anything, including yourself.

The flusher attaches directly to whatever tool is on the end of the hose and is used like a plunger to “flush” out your gutters.

Do not use a pressure washer as this will not only damage your gutter’s material, but it can also damage your home’s exterior.

#3. Removing Debris Manually

If you are not comfortable working at heights or on ladders, manual removal of debris is typically the best method.

First make sure your gutters are clean downstream. You can either hire a professional gutter cleaner to do this for you or buy a tool called a Gutter Stalker, which is designed specifically for this job.

Looking into gutter guards might be a good idea for you.
