5 Signs You May Need Well Repair

Last Updated on March 3, 2022 by

Did you know that around 15% of the US population relies on private well water?

Many don’t realize it, but they’re using one of the oldest designs for water transport to get clean water into their homes. Despite the design’s age, modern technology produces efficient pumps that can last up to 30 years with proper maintenance.

Because of their lifespan, though, it’s hard to know if you need to call a well repair service. These services are essential lest your home stop receiving water to use. To know when you need well repair, read what we’ve prepared below today.

1. Air Sputters Out Your Faucet

Water should be the only thing that comes out of your faucet. If air sputters out of it when turning it on, it means your pump isn’t consistent in pulling water. Things like a crack on the pipe or having your well run dry.

Regardless, having your well checked by a professional is important here. If this persists, air can dry up your pipes completely, or mix with moisture and breed mold.

2. Low Water Pressure

If you don’t hear air sputtering out of your faucet, but don’t have enough water coming up, it’s because you have low water pressure. It’s a glaring sign that your pump is failing.

There may be damage to the well pump’s mechanism in this case. You’ll need professional help here as these mechanisms often have many moving parts, with some more fragile than others.

Having an inefficient pump could also be an issue. Bathroom expansions often mean your pump needs to supply water to more areas. Pressure tanks can help resolve this issue by providing constant pressure throughout the house.

3. Well Pump Runs Constantly

A pump running constantly sounds like a blessing, but it’s not the case for well problems. They should only run when the pump needs to fill up the water tank. Once the tank reaches a certain level, the pump shuts off by itself.

Running constantly means there’s a problem with one of the pump’s internal mechanisms. One of the pipes may have a leak, causing the pump’s pressure control switch to go haywire. A worn pipe can also be the cause, as it can’t generate enough pressure to trigger the automatic cut-off.

4. Loud Noises

Loud noises from your pump are a telltale sign of wear and internal damage. Hearing these means you need to have it checked as soon as possible. Not doing so will only lead to more damage, making repairs more expensive.

5. Water is Dirty

Having dirt or sediment floating around in your water means there’s something wrong with the pump itself. It may be too large for the well, causing it to pull up sediment from the ground. The pump may also have a torn filter, allowing dirt through.

Calling a well repair company is essential at this point. There’s no telling what other pollutants your well is pulling up and infusing your water with.
