When you’re involved in a car accident, it’s important to know what to do (and not do) in order to protect yourself and your rights. There are certain steps you should take in order to ensure your safety and the safety of others.

Things You Should Do

If you are involved in an accident, there are five things you should do:

1. Stop your vehicle and turn off the engine.

2. Move your vehicle to the side of the road, if possible.

3. Call 911 and report the accident. Give them your location and any injuries that may have occurred.

4. Exchange information with the other driver(s) involved in the accident. This includes names, phone numbers, insurance information, and license plate numbers.

5. Take pictures of the scene of the accident, if possible. This can be helpful in documenting what happened for insurance purposes or for a potential court case down the road.

6. Call a car accident lawyer like Attorney Mike Morse

What to Do After a Car Accident Not Your Fault?

No one ever wants to be in a car accident. But if you find yourself in one that wasn’t your fault, there are some important things you need to do.

First, stay calm and don’t panic.

It can be easy to get overwhelmed but it’s important to think clearly so you can take the necessary steps.

Next, check yourself and your passengers for injuries and call 911 if anyone needs medical attention. Once everyone is safe, move your car out of the way of traffic if possible. If not, turn on your hazard lights.

Then, exchange insurance information with the other driver(s) involved. Be sure to get their name, address, phone number, and insurance company name and policy number.

It’s also a good idea to take pictures of the damage to both vehicles as well as any other evidence at the scene (skid marks, debris, etc.). This will all be helpful when filing a claim with your insurance company later on. Lastly, contact your insurance company as soon as possible to report the accident and start the claims process. They will likely ask for all of the same information that you collected from the other driver(s). Be honest about what happened and don’t try to hide anything – this could end up costing you down the road if something isn’t reported accurately.

Things You Should Not Do

Here are some things you should avoid doing:

Don’t leave the scene of the accident. This is considered a hit and run and is a serious offense. Don’t admit fault. Even if you think you may be at fault, wait until all the facts are known before taking responsibility. Your admission could be used against you later.

Don’t forget to exchange insurance information with the other driver(s) involved. This is essential for making sure everyone is covered.

Don’t forget to call the police, even if the accident seems minor. They can help document what happened and may be able to issue citations if necessary.

By staying calm and gathering all the necessary information upfront, you’ll make things much easier on yourself in the long run!
