Renovate your bathroom

Last Updated on July 3, 2023 by

It might often go unsaid but your bathroom is probably the most important room in your entire house. I know, it might sound crazy, but think about it yourself; doesn’t it feel amazing when your bathroom is clean and smells of flowers? It is the bathroom that maintains the rest of the house’s atmosphere, which is why remodeling it is a wonderful option if you’re tired of the same old cramped room with poor ventilation or lights. In Australia, bathroom renovations are a booming business, with 233,000 of them being renovated out of 9.4 million homes in 2018-19. If you want to renovate your bathroom, check out these five things to take care of.

1. Evaluate your finances

Sure, a Kardashian-standard bathroom might be on everyone’s wishlist, but is that really feasible? You can first check out the average costs of remodelling a bathroom before you get your hopes up too high.

Even though a rough estimate is there on the internet, every bathroom and every remodelling is different and unique. So something that applies to another house’s bathroom may not necessarily apply to yours.

The amount of money you spend depends on the size of your bathroom, the type of project you want, and the quality of materials used.

Before you even start working on the entire renovation project, sit and discuss it with the planner or decorator. Be honest and straightforward about the amount you are planning to spend. It’s your bathroom ultimately, so whatever you wish shall be done by your decorator.

2. Consider the essential items first

After you’ve set a rough budget for the renovation, it’s now time to evaluate which items are essential and which are not.

Needless to say, you must spend generously on essential items like taps, washbasins, showers, etc. Any remodelling price will include the kind of things you want your bathroom to have.

If you’re slightly tight on a budget, it’s best to leave out the accessories in the beginning. If you see later than you have a bit of money left, you can always spend on the non-essential items.

For example, a fancy shelf with nooks for scented candles or a jacuzzi tub are all lovely ideas, but they shouldn’t be bought on a whim. First, spend on the things that cannot be compromised and then look at the remaining appliances.

3. Flooring

Your bathroom will obviously be subjected to a lot of water and suds frequently. So it’s wise to choose a slip-resistant material for the flooring, or else you’ll end up falling and hurting yourself in the shower.

Small tiles with wide grout lines offer more friction so that you don’t slip easily. There are also many other options to choose from that go with any style that you might wish to include.

If you live in a place that becomes extremely cold during winters or is freezing all year, you can spend a little more and install electrically heated flooring under the tiles. This way, the floor will be warm and you won’t have to worry about slipping.

4. Lighting

When it comes to the lighting, choose lights that are soft and warm. Too many harsh lights will ruin the ambience of your bathroom and give you a headache when you walk inside.

Also, since you won’t be doing any heavy reading or computer work in a bathroom, there isn’t much use in installing bright lights.

Opt for colour-corrected daylight lights that are fluorescent, LED, or halogen in nature. Softer lights will make grooming and makeup applications much easier. Try to allow natural light to seep in as much as possible in this room.

5. Plumbing

Depending on the cabinets you choose, your plumbing will be done accordingly. See if you’re willing to reconfigure the entire plumbing or not while getting new cabinets. If you don’t have the budget, you can simply make small changes to the pipes.
