5 Simple Ways to Secure Your New Home

Last Updated on February 13, 2024 by Nasir Hanif

Decorating your new home is most certainly a highlight of moving into it. However, things get real when you realize the vulnerability of your new home to burglars. Home invasions occur every 30 seconds in the U.S.2 Since this is an unpleasant topic to think about, take some time to set up home security fast. Here are some ways to protect your new home before you even move in.

Secure the doors

You want to keep your house safe. Well, door security is one of the best places to start. Most burglars will never break through a locked door. They’re looking for an easy point of entry that they can slip inside of while you’re at work or sleeping. Changing your door locks to something stronger is a great way to secure your home and set yourself up to prevent burglaries.

Light up the landscape

Light up the landscape! Security lights can discourage criminals and help protect your home and family. You can avoid burglars by placing lights around your home, making it more difficult for them to hide. Motion-activated outdoor lights can alert you when a person or car is nearby, giving you time to prepare as they approach. And solar security lights don’t require any wiring, so you don’t have to worry about thieves cutting through your home’s electrical system.

Eliminate hiding places

When burglars come to your home, they’re like a bunch of creepy exes who just want to check out your stuff—and maybe make off with a few things.

They’re not saints. They’re not going to jump out of the bushes and yell “Surprise!” and then run away laughing. The last thing you want is to give them the opportunity to hide somewhere in your yard and then when you’re asleep, sneak into your home.

You can prevent that by ensuring you don’t have any hiding places for thieves. Here are some ways you can do that:

  • Always put away stools and ladders. If these items are left in the yard, burglars can use them to climb up on your roof or peek into windows!
  • Lock gates, sheds, and other outdoor buildings. You might have expensive tools or equipment in there that’s worth stealing, so keep everything behind locked doors.
  • Don’t tempt thieves by leaving pricey goods on display in the yard. Don’t leave expensive-looking toys or bikes out where they can be easily snatched from the lawn or driveway. It’s just asking for trouble!
  • Add security signs and stickers, i.e no trespassing sign, even if you don’t have a security system. This will make it look.

 Add security cameras

Home security is important, and a smart first step in protecting your family and home is installing security cameras. Having security cameras provides peace of mind, but only if you take the time to secure them properly. Sadly, many of us have heard about home security footage being compromised by hackers. Take proactive measures to protect your cameras from hackers too.

Use home automation

Home automation can make your life easier by letting you remotely control lights, door locks, security cameras, smoke alarms, emergency exits, and other safety devices. Motion sensors are a great investment: They can alert you to potential danger or give you real-time updates while you’re away from home. Even if you’re not sure what kind of home automation system you need, choose one that offers remote access and real-time alerts, so you’ll know if there’s suspicious activity in your home.
