Find out if cannabis has always been illegal and what makes the plant different from legal drugs like alcohol.

Besides, you can legally buy high-quality CBD buds online at the best online CBD shops. So, what are you waiting for to fully enjoy CBD’s benefits?

Hemp plants have been around since the beginning of humanity

Cannabis was used even in the Stone Age. Cleopatra and Nefertiti also appreciated the skin-caring effect of hemp oil in their beauty rituals. Thus, creams, oils and balms were made from the hemp plant in ancient times. The plant came to Europe with the Crusaders in the Middle Ages. There it was first cultivated in monasteries.

Has cannabis always been illegal?

The official cannabis ban was only decided in 1925. Before that, all hemp products were allowed. The European and US wood and chemical industries wanted to force the competing product hemp off the market.

While initially ropes, paper, ship’s sails or insulating materials made of industrial hemp were made, these sustainable materials should soon be replaced by cheaper plastics and artificial fibres.

Europe then implemented the cannabis ban in 1929 in what is known today as the Narcotics Act and is still in force. Ironically, one reason for this was that in the 1920s, Germany and France were the market leaders in the cocaine and heroin trade and wanted to avoid sanctions by the Americans. As a result, it was not until 2017 that cannabis was finally approved in some countries as a medicine for certain serious diseases.

Each country is subject to specific legislation on selling cannabis or marijuana seeds.

Following the agreement reached in the Vienna Convention in 1961, trading in cannabis seeds is legal in the UK, in Europe and in Japan, Canada and Russia. Likewise, possessing cannabis seeds in the UK and Europe does not constitute a crime.

In said convention, precisely on March 30th, 1961, the Single Convention of the United Nations was reached, which was ratified in the UK and Europe on February 3rd, 1966.

However, later, a regulation specified that marijuana – as the cannabis plant’s “fruit” – would be considered narcotic! This was the start of the cannabis and marijuana demonization.

It came along with a ban on trading and cultivating cannabis in the UK and Europe!

Likewise, it is emphasized again that the seeds that are marketed in the different countries included in the Single Agreement must be identified, packaged and not explicitly intended for germination. Since the cultivation of cannabis can be subject to administrative and criminal sanctions (Art. 25.1 of the Organic Law for the Protection of Citizen Security and Art. 368 of the Penal Code) and also collaboration as third parties.

Legislation varies by country, so you should always consider local or national laws before buying. For example, it is illegal to germinate them in any country.

Denmark and CBD

In 2018, cannabis products containing only 0.2% THC were legalized. This means that CBD oil derived from hemp is legal and freely available.

However, the CBD regulation in the country is quite complicated, involving multiple authorities, which often entails restrictions that manufacturers must comply with. This does not affect the customers. CBD can be bought entirely legally online in Denmark.

Bulgaria and CBD cannabis

Hemp cultivation is legal in Bulgaria if a state-issued license is in place. In addition, the country has allowed import and legal sales since June 2019, thus circumventing the EU Novel Food Guideline.

There is a legal limit for THC in hemp plants, less than 0.2%. However, even today, processing hemp for CBD is still illegal.

Estonia and CBD

CBD is not classified as a psychotropic substance in Estonia and is legal.

The country follows the EU regulation on Novel Food. Therefore since June 2019, CBD products are not allowed to be sold as food. However, since 2005, the medicinal use of hemp and products made from it have been permitted in Estonia.

In Estonia, too, medical CBD is only available by prescription from a doctor. However, there are some loopholes in the country’s law, so CBD finds itself in a legal grey area.

CBD in Finland

There is also a legal grey area in Finland regarding CBD. However, the trend is that CBD is banned in the country. There are some national regulations and EU regulations that CBD is subject to.

The regulation on whether a CBD product may be offered on the market is handled by various authorities. The purpose and specifications of the product are crucial for this. For example, the country’s drug agency considers CBD a prescription medicine.

The Finnish Food Safety Authority, on the other hand, adheres to the EU’s Novel Foods Regulation. There are many loopholes in Finnish law. Many companies use these gaps to sell CBD products. However, it is entirely possible that importing CBD into Finland may be illegal.

Conclusion

CBD products have several properties and benefits. As long as they contein an amount of THC lower than 0.2% their totally legal throughout the whole Europe.
