If you want to build a home gym, you’re in good company! In the wake of the pandemic, not everyone is rushing back to the gym.
Home gym cost, as compared to the cost of a monthly gym membership, is a much better deal. It saves a lot of money, time, and energy in the long run. And it also can save you from spending money on commuting to the gym, exposing yourself in the case of a vicious flu season or COVID resurgence, and is an investment for the long run.
However, there are so many types of equipment, whether you’re setting up a small workout area or an entire garage gym. That’s why we’ve assembled a guide to home gym cost, and how much you should really invest in your workout space!
Be Honest With Yourself
The main reason that many people hesitate over a home gym is that they know themselves. They invest in a gym membership and rarely use it.
If you’re not committed to an activity, sinking tons of money into all types of equipment isn’t a great idea. Treat it like dipping your toe in the water.
If you’re not used to regular activity, you likely wouldn’t sink hundreds of dollars into the most expensive gym membership, workout apparel, and so forth. That’s why you should start small when you build a home gym.
Start with a jump rope or a set of adjustable dumbbells. After you’ve ‘proven yourself’—that you’re truly going to keep up at-home fitness—then add a treadmill, a stationary bike, or another piece of equipment that’s more expensive.
When you start slow, you also keep your costs down. A set of adjustable dumbbells isn’t terribly expensive, for instance. And each piece of equipment you buy is a long-term investment that can last for the rest of your life.
Tailor Your Gym
The reason that normal gyms have so much variety is that they are trying to appeal to many different clients. You might love the weight racks, but someone else might come for the cardio machines alone.
If you don’t often use a piece of equipment, don’t buy it! When you build a home gym, you get to tailor it exactly how you want it. Think about where you head first in a normal gym.
Then, pick the types of equipment out of that section and start adding them to your garage gym one at a time.
This is also a good opportunity to assess what you truly need. If you use the treadmill and dumbbells, maybe you’d like to replace the treadmill with running in the great outdoors.
Then, you can come home to your workout area and use the dumbells that you bought with your own money. And you won’t need to fight with anyone else who is reaching for the same weight you are!

Home gym cost doesn’t need to be prohibitive. Don’t break the bank to outfit your garage gym! Instead, take your time and think about the types of equipment you use and love.
