If celebrities and personalities have film fests such as the Academy Awards or the Cannes Film Awards to flaunt their glamour on the red carpet, luxury watches have theirs too! Luxury brands and collectors have this time to show the world the best timepieces in their possession. The event in question? Auctions! Yes, you read that right! It is during big auctions that we get to see the best watches of the era. One auction that we will talk about is a much-awaited charity auction that only happens every other year, called the Only Watch. The Only Watch auction gave us the most expensive wristwatch sold on auction: the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime. This year, Only Watch rolled out their red carpets again for the best watches of the year. Check these out!
Imperfect-looking watches are quite a style today; this is one of the concepts that Tudor has incorporated in their entry for the Only Watch auction 2021. They went for the rugged yet sexy style with the Black Bay GMT One. This 41mm watch is one of the Tudor watches that boldly used imperfect and reactive materials for its case. You might think, “who in their right mind will use imperfect materials for their cases on purpose?” That is how bold and experimental Tudor is.
For the Only Watch auction, the Tudor Black Bay GMT One boasts a one-of-a-kind design because of its stainless-steel case coated with a barrel-tumbled finish in black. Its bridges, main plate, and bracelet have the same color. Of course, what truly exercises the excellence of this watch is on the inside: a movement with a COSC certification because of its (0/+5 seconds a day) precision. It is not as vulnerable as other luxury watches because it is resistant to magnetic fields as high as 15,00 gausses. This Tudor watch costs a staggering $4,300 to $8,600.
Another watch in the Only Watch auction that deserves your attention is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin. You can say that this timepiece is one of the most fashionable sports watches worldwide. Everyone is just itching to get one of these! This sandblasted titanium watch also has a glossy Bulk Metallic glass—designs that make the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin the star of the night! What is also appealing about this is it has new sets of materials. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin costs about $173,000 to $345,000.
One of the most famous designer brands does not want to miss this luxury watch party. A bag famous for its luxury bags and accessories also has an entry for the Only Watch auction! There are no signs of stopping for Louis Vuitton as they present the LV Tambour Curve GMT Flying Tourbillon. Louis Vuitton truly overdid themselves with this one, because this beautiful watch has its iconic LV monogram on the canvas trunk where they present the timepiece with. However, instead of the usual Louis Vuitton color, they customized the monogram with the Only Watch colors!
As for the timepiece itself, this Louis Vuitton watch has titanium make with 18k rose gold lugs. The 46mm has a unique design that shows a black grid on its dial, in contrast to its red-to-yellow gradient background. For its hour markers, it has a sapphire cut in baguette shapes. This wristwatch has a value of $86,400 up to $108,000.
Another luxury bag catches up to the luxury watches red carpet! Hermès presented not only one watch, but two watches! Hermès featured an H08 pair of watches for men in brilliant titanium. This Hermès H08 pair has unique dials in black gold, which perfectly contrasts with its orange highlights. This pair has the same orange straps made with rubber and a bracelet made with titanium. The price? This watch costs $15,100 to $19,400.
Of course, the Only Watch auction will not be complete without this prestigious brand. For this year, TAG Heuer stays true to its brand reputation of being bold with treading modern designs. They presented a modern take on one of their famous watches, the TAG Heuer Monaco “Dark Lord” reference. For the Only Watch version, they used forged carbon as their unique case. Its dial is also see-through or skeletonized. To agree with its “Dark Lord” design, it has a caliber of Heuer 02 with a carbon hairspring inside. This stunning watch costs $54,000 to $108,000.
Another one of the famous luxury watch brands whose entry you should not miss is Hublot. This year, it boasts its 45mm Big Bang Tourbillon—a watch with a self-winding movement and a design out there for the kill. It has a case and bridges made of sapphire crystal to give it a transparent illusion. To contrast this, it also has orange elements. The piece has a power reserve of up to 115 hours. It costs a staggering $172,800 to $194,400.
The bearer of the most expensive wristwatch ever sold on auction, Patek Philippe is also one of the luxury watch brands everyone anticipates. The maker of the $72M Grandmaster Chime, Patek Philippe presented a different watch this year. They boasted a desk clock with sophisticated complications. This elegant watch takes its inspiration from the watch they delivered in 1923 to tycoon James Ward Packard. The complications of this watch include moon phases, power reserve indicator, number of the week, and of course, a perpetual calendar. Its case is made of sterling silver with an inlay made of American walnut. Compared to the Grandmaster Chime, this desk clock costs a humble (but still expensive!) $432,000 to $540,000.
