5 Tips for preparing for exams

When you’re in college or even high school, it is important that you know how to prepare for exams, as they play a vital role in your academic journey. Even though people have different practices and preferences, there are a lot of ways that study time can be maximized to produce efficient results.

Working hard is important, but so also is working smart. You should be sure to take study breaks so you don’t end up suffering burnout, from stress or anxiety. For the best results, here are tips and strategies that will put you in good stead for your exams.

Begin your revision early!

This is vital, as there’s no magic to finishing a curriculum. You need sufficient time to be able to review the entirety of what you studied and also understand it. Starting your revision early will also give you enough time to find help if you don’t understand something. It isn’t very productive to cram your books, as you might end up forgetting some parts, which could be disastrous.

Set up your study time

Some subjects will definitely be easier for you than others. Also, some subjects will have more topics to study than others. In that case, you need to plan your revision with consideration for the amount of time you’ll need to complete each subject. You should also determine the number of hours you have to study in a day. If you have other commitments, make a schedule based on those. Ensure that your schedule is created with your best study time in mind. If you can concentrate better in the morning, or you’re most focused at night, you should make sure that you create time to study during that period.

Take care of yourself during study and exam periods

When you eat healthy and get enough sleep, you will surely be able to assimilate better. This applies to your study time and exam period. It’s not a good idea to eat mainly junk food during this period. Regular exercise can also help as it gets your blood flowing and helps you concentrate more. Brisk walks are a great way to exercise during this phase.

Switch up your revision techniques

Variety is a great way to keep things interesting, and this applies to study as well. Using the same study technique over and over again (e.g., reading from your notes) is a surefire way to make study time dull and tedious. You need to add some variations to your study time by trying new techniques and exercises. Some of these include:

  • Answering practice questions to see how well you understand a subject. Your tutors might even be happy to grade them for you.
  • Creating summary diagrams or mind-maps to examine what you can recall and see if they check out with your notes; you can make use of a PC or a sheet of paper for this. With a Computers for College Student, you can make a choice that suits you best.
  • Setting up discussion groups with friends to talk about any tricky areas of a subject.

Take study breaks

It’s a very unwise to study non-stop, for hours on end. It is actually very difficult to concentrate on work or study for more than one hour. Granted, there will be days when you’re more alert, but an hour and a half might be what you can give before you will require a break. You should take periodic breaks of ten minutes or so, to get refreshed.
